What happens at a baptism?

If you sign up to get baptized, a member of Waypoint staff will be in touch with you beforehand with instructions about the day, what to wear, and how to give your testimony.

On the day itself, a pastor will meet you before the service to go over expectations and final logistics.

During the service, testimonies will be first (from the stage) before the baptisms begin. One at a time, each person will make their way into the water where a pastor will pray with you before saying the words: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit”. They will then lay their hands behind your head and shoulders, and help you go under the water.

When you come up out of the water, please know that it is fully acceptable to express your feelings. This is a very emotional and significant time. There is nothing more beautiful than people cheering and joining in with you as you celebrate your faith in Jesus.

You will then leave the water, dry off, and be escorted into the hallway of the church for a time of group prayer.

Who should be baptized?

Jesus final words in Matthew 28:18-20 were: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit…” Therefore, everyone who has put their faith and trust in Jesus should be baptized. Baptism doesn’t save us, but it is an ordinance Jesus has given His church as a symbol and action to show the world what they believe and who is the Lord of their life. Baptism is not merely a responsibility but a privilege. We have the opportunity to evidence our trust and love for King Jesus through obedience in this ordinance. As soon as a person trusts in Christ, he or she should be baptized.

What should I wear when I’m baptized?

Changing rooms are opposite the sanctuary. Bring a change of clothes, a towel, and a plastic bag for your wet belongings.

We encourage you to wear shorts and a dark top (with a swimsuit underneath for women).

You will receive a Waypoint T-shirt on the day.

Can I be baptized with my family?

Of course, we encourage it! If each one of your family members has professed faith in Jesus Christ and understands the meaning of baptism, we encourage you to be baptized at the same time.

Waypoint does not a put an age restriction on baptism, but young children who want to be baptized should understand what they are doing, and need to be able to give their testimony from the stage.

It is important to remember that baptism is a personal statement of faith and not a religious tradition. Therefore, baptism should be a personal and not a parental decision.

Friends or family are also welcome to be the ones to actually baptize you, just let us know in advance.

Should I be re-baptized?

For those who were sprinkled or immersed at an earlier age, it is important to understand that we should only be baptized once. If you trusted in Christ at that time, your baptism is valid and there is no need to repeat it. However, if you were sprinkled with or immersed in water before being born again and trusting God, your experience was not baptism and therefore you need to be baptized. The only prerequisite in Scripture for baptism is repentance and faith in Jesus. Therefore, the main question to ask is: “Did I truly trust in Christ when I was baptized before?” 

Who should I invite?

Baptism is a celebration of new life in Jesus! It is a celebration, and we hope you will invite your friends and family to see you get baptized. Nothing is more important to us than our relationship with Jesus, and this is a great opportunity to celebrate it. We have found that even those in your family and circle of friends who are not religious, or who have not made a commitment to Christ, are usually happy to attend and support you. There is no limit to how many people you can invite.
